Living Conduit – Indigenous History and Present Day is a dual-project exhibition by Shinnecock artist Jeremy Dennis, hosted at South Ocean Gallery in Freeport.
Drawing on Dennis’ On This Site project, the exhibition looks to the landscapes of Freeport and the Merrick/Meroke ancestral homeland to reveal layers of historical erasure, including the carting away of wampum shell heaps and the absence of the monument once marking the Merokee village site.
The exhibition is anchored by the Shinnecock Portrait Project, pairing landscapes that chronicle loss with portraits and interviews that assert continuity, survivance, and the living presence of Long Island Indigenous communities.
Public viewing is scheduled from October 3 to November 21, 2026. Programming includes a meet-the-artist opening reception on October 17, 2026, an artist talk and activity on October 24, 2026, and opportunities for school groups to visit during the exhibition period.
