In Light and Shadow: A Photographic History from Indigenous America brings an exhibition and book signing to Obscura Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The exhibition is on view August 14–September 26, 2026.
Co-authored by Iñupiaq photographer Brian Adams and photographer, author, and archival researcher Sarah Stacke, the book presents more than 250 photographs by 80 individuals and collectives. It brings together work by fine artists, family chroniclers, yearbook staff, political groups, and others to trace an Indigenous American photographic canon that has shaped visual culture since the dawn of the medium.
Curated by Obscura Gallery, Brian Adams, and Sarah Stacke, the exhibition presents work by 20 contemporary Indigenous American photographers featured in the book. Their photographs explore sovereignty, identity, land, and community. Historical photographs are shown alongside contemporary works to reveal visual lineages across generations, Indigenous societies, and nations.
Book signing and artists’ reception: Saturday, August 15, 2026. The book signing begins at 3:00 p.m., followed by an artists’ reception from 4:00–6:00 p.m., with many participating artists present.
