A Moment of Our Time: A Shinnecock Response to America 250 brings together Shinnecock artists to consider the United States’ 250th anniversary from a distinctly Shinnecock perspective. Jeremy Dennis is the exhibition’s curator and is also a participating artist.
The exhibition reflects on occupation, colonization, land, military service, cultural survival, family memory, sovereignty, and the continuing effects of American history on Shinnecock life. Its title reframes 250 years as one consequential moment within more than 10,000 years of Shinnecock relationships with the lands and waters of eastern Long Island and Turtle Island.
