This Land: Considering the American Landscape is The Church’s Summer 2026 exhibition, organized in response to the question of how artists have imagined, represented, used, and contested the American landscape. Timed with the United States’ 250th anniversary year, the exhibition brings historic American landscape traditions into conversation with contemporary artists working across photography, painting, sculpture, video, mixed media, and performance.
The exhibition places works associated with the Hudson River School alongside contemporary perspectives that complicate older ideas of the sublime landscape. Contemporary works address land use, borders, immigration, labor, occupation, Indigenous presence, social class, and the material realities of the land itself.
Jeremy Dennis, Thomas Doughty, Asher B. Durand, Christina Fernandez, April Gornik, Leslie Hewitt, Sky Hopinka, An-My Le, Zoe Leonard, Richard Mayhew, Charles Henry Miller, Kent Monkman, Mary Nimmo Moran, Thomas Moran, Sam Moyer, Arcmanoro Niles, James Perkins, Albert Pinkham Ryder, Lucy Raven, Anastasia Samoylova, Meg Webster, selections from Dan Flavin’s collection of Hudson River School paintings and works on paper, and a contribution from the Center for Land Use Interpretation.
The exhibition includes important loans from regional and national institutions. The Parrish Art Museum contributes Hudson River School works by Asher B. Durand, Thomas Doughty, Charles Henry Miller, Thomas Moran, Mary Nimmo Moran, and Albert Pinkham Ryder. Guild Hall lends work by Thomas Moran, whose history is closely tied to East Hampton. Dia Art Foundation lends selections from Dan Flavin’s personal collection of Hudson River School works on paper, extending the exhibition’s connection to the East End and to the Dan Flavin Art Institute in Bridgehampton.
The exhibition is accompanied by related concerts, performances, lectures, and tours that expand the conversation around land, memory, history, and place.
