#Repost @parrishart• • • • • •“Our Artists, Our Neighbors” features photographer and 2018 #ParrishRoadShow artist @jeremynative, a member of the federally recognized Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton. Dennis’s digital photographs, often using himself as the model, explore indigenous identity, assimilation, and tradition.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Dennis once lived in Pennsylvania near rock quarries, and became fascinated with their textures. Years later, he discovered the #Iroquois legend of The Stone Coats—giant stone figures who roamed the forests competing for game animals with humans. (The tiny figure in the tree establishes scale.) “I used the quarry textures over my skin in the photograph, burning and dodging layers digitally. It accomplished the theme of the story for me.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Dennis himself is part of another legacy—artists on Long Island’s East End. “First and foremost, I’m a #Shinnecock artist, honoring a long legacy of great painters, carvers, and story tellers. Highlighting the Shinnecock Nation’s presence in Southampton is a personal mission and having my work in the Parrish supports that.
