From the Rise series, Rise is a photographic series that explores the enduring fear of Indigenous resistance in the United States, a fear rooted in historical events like the Pequot Massacre and King Philip’s War—moments marked by brutality, land theft, and the attempted erasure of Native peoples. Rather than portraying Indigenous communities as vanquished relics, Rise reclaims the narrative through speculative imagery that imagines a future uprising, using the zombie motif as a metaphor for the colonial portrayal of Native Americans as threats to settler expansion. Inspired in part by Noam Chomsky’s analysis of American zombie obsession, the series replaces the undead with the image of the resilient Native person, confronting cultural misrepresentation through irony and unsettling juxtapositions. In doing so, Rise critiques the absurdity of lingering colonial fears and affirms the continued presence, sovereignty, and resistance of Indigenous nations in the face of ongoing erasure.
