Native Guide reimagines the colonial narrative of “Indian captivity” through a surreal and symbolic lens. In the image, a Native figure carries a white woman toward the shoreline—the same site where her ancestors first arrived generations ago. By reversing the historical power dynamic, Jeremy Dennis transforms the familiar trope of rescue and captivity into one of reckoning and return.
The shoreline becomes both a literal and metaphorical threshold—a place of arrival, displacement, and confrontation. The Native figure, calm and deliberate, embodies guidance and endurance, while the carried woman represents a collective history being brought back to the place where it began. Rather than a scene of violence or fear, Native Guide suggests restoration and reversal, challenging the myths that once cast Indigenous peoples as threats or savages.
