Description
Lucky Stick Pile, based on an oral account ca. 1930, published in The Spirit of The New England Tribes, published by William S. Simmons in 1986.
In southern Mashpee, there was a supposed wishing place. Each time a person passed the spot, it was a custom while passing whether in a wagon or walking to pick up a stick or a small tree, spit on it, and make a wish while throwing it on the pile.
Those in the area were suspicious that if the custom were not respected, evil spirits would follow those who passed and did not carry it out.
