Description
The Shinnecock Hills glacial erratic is believed to mark a sacred site that once hosted the June Meeting and possibly a Shinnecock fort, both of which hold deep historical and cultural importance for Long Island’s Indigenous peoples. June Meeting, started by Reverend Paul Cuffee in the 1700s, blends Algonquian seasonal traditions with Christian influences and continues as an annual celebration of dance, feasting, and storytelling on the first Sunday of June. These gatherings originally marked seasonal changes, honored ancestors, and served as reunions for families across tribal lines. Glacial erratics like this one have long served as natural landmarks and council rocks—meeting places for tribal leaders. Though now outside the current Shinnecock reservation, the site is preserved by the Town of Southampton for its cultural significance.
