GARRISON ART CENTER AWARDED $40,000 BY THE NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS
Jeremy Dennis, 2025 Visiting Artist at GAC receives $10,000 grant
DECEMBER 4, 2024, GARRISON, NY – Garrison Art Center (GAC) announced today a grant award totaling
$40,000 from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) to support the nonprofit arts and culture sector.
Along with this general support grant, Garrison Art Center has also been awarded an additional $10,000 to
support Artist Jeremy Dennis, Garrison Art Center’s Visiting Artist for 2025. Through New York State’s continued
investment in arts and culture, NYSCA has awarded $82 million this year to 509 artists and 1,497 organizations
across the state.

Hochul said. “Our continued investment in our dynamic creative sector will further boost tourism, strengthen our
local economies, and continue New York’s success as a rich and vibrant place to live, work and visit.”

supporting the critical work of so many nonprofit organizations all across the state, including Garrison Art Center.
New York State’s art and culture nonprofits make us a global leader, strengthening our connections to each

“We thank NYSCA for this award,” said Garrison Art Center Executive Director Catherine Graham. “As we
celebrate 60 years of growth, this grant strengthens our mission to inspire artists of all ages and foster inclusivity
in the arts. We are committed to expanding outreach in local schools, hosting events and exhibitions that draw
thousands in the lower Hudson Valley, and providing financial assistance and programs for artists of all skill
levels. We are especially grateful for the Support for Artists grant for our 2025 visiting artist Jeremy Dennis,
whose solo exhibition, May 17–June 22, 2025, will highlight contemporary native art and photography,
deepening appreciation for inclusive cultural narratives.”
Artist, Jeremy Dennis a resident of the Shinnecock Indian Nation in Southampton, New York, proposes an
immersive art installation that showcases a selection of photographs from the “Rise” Project. “Rise” is a
collaborative endeavor that involves a series of self-portraiture digital photographs, complemented by the
participation of various volunteers spanning a diverse spectrum of artists, Hamptons residents, and individuals
sympathetic to the overarching concept of “Rise.”

Dennis intends to leverage the NYSCA Support for Artists grant funds to develop new artworks for the “Rise”
series that will be showcased in a comprehensive exhibition at the Garrison Art Center, May 17 – June 22, 2025.
Alongside the exhibition, Dennis will conduct workshops, artist talks, and educational programming aimed at
fostering dialogue and understanding around the themes explored in “Rise.” By actively engaging with diverse
audiences, Dennis seeks to provoke critical reflection on the legacy of colonization and the ongoing challenges
faced by indigenous communities. Through its innovative approach and commitment to public engagement, the
project promises to ignite conversations, challenge perceptions, and inspire meaningful change within both
artistic and societal realms.
