About the exhibition

Hearts of the Harvest: Seeds, Stories, and Sovereignty brings together Shinnecock artists and Indigenous Ma’s House alumni whose work grows from land, memory, community, and futurity. The exhibition takes inspiration, in part, from the Villanova student documentary Seeds We Bury, connecting the Ati Tribe of Boracay in the Philippines and the Shinnecock Nation through generational storytelling and the ways Indigenous island communities protect land, people, and culture.

Harvest is both literal and metaphorical: planting, tending, gathering, and seasonal relationships with the earth, as well as the knowledge, stories, and responsibilities carried across generations. Roots become ancestry, place-based memory, and deep ties to Shinnecock homelands. Seeds become artworks, songs, images, gestures, and conversations that may grow into new forms of learning, solidarity, and repair.

Through photography, painting, mixed media, leatherwork, film, installation, and performance, the artists consider waterways, gardens, migration, family histories, survivance, loss, and return. Organized by Guest Curator Jeremy Dennis of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio Inc. in collaboration with Villanova University Art Gallery, the exhibition is both an exhibition and a teaching space.
