Jeremy Dennis is participating in The Pursuit of Happiness, a juried group exhibition of Indigenous artists at the Harold (’62) and Mary Frank Main Gallery in the University of Rhode Island Fine Arts Center.
Presented in collaboration with the Tomaquag Museum and the URI Department of Art and Art History, the exhibition considers the facts and fictions surrounding the Declaration of Independence’s promise of the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as the United States marks the Declaration’s 250th anniversary. The show centers Indigenous perspectives on resilience, identity, community, sovereignty, and the layered realities of joy, survival, and fulfillment.

Many Nations, Under One, All Invisible responds to the exhibition’s 250th-anniversary theme by questioning whose life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness were protected by the founding promises of the United States. By concealing an Indigenous figure beneath the American flag, the image points to the hundreds of Native nations made invisible within national narratives of freedom while insisting that Indigenous presence, sovereignty, and memory continue beneath and beyond those narratives.
