Group Show: “Contradictory Omens” at House Savacou on Governors Island in New York, NY

Contradictory Omens is a group exhibition curated by Tao Leigh Goffe and presented by Dark Laboratory at Dark Lab Gallery, House Savacou, Governors Island, New York City.

The exhibition brings together Alex Callender, Jeremy Dennis, Nathaniel Télémaque, and Tajah Ellis, artists working with the saturation of light and dark as a sovereign aesthetic. Through paintings, photographs, and textiles, the exhibition responds to dominant narratives of conquest across the Americas and considers Black and Native survival, opacity, land, and the haunted histories of the Western hemisphere.

Drawing from Kamau Brathwaite’s call to consider the “fragments/whole,” Contradictory Omens gathers contemporary works that look beyond colonial and tourist gazes toward sovereign, otherworldly visions of the Americas. The exhibition marks the opening of the art gallery at House Savacou in Nolan Park on Governors Island.
